I recently realized that I often refers back to water flowing along and, whatever the obstacles, getting to its destination (even if it takes a long time!) when I reflect on some challenges in my own coaching sessions (yes, coaches have their own coaches too!).

I like this word “flow” because it also means something else… something that’s been critical in my life and, when it was missing, led me to changes (sometimes, big changes!)…

“Flow” is also that state we’re in when our “body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile” – according to Mihály Csíkszentmihályi (see my article: Life Coaching: To Be or Not To Be in “Flow”?).

Can you remember the last time you were in “FLOW” – so immerged in what you were doing that you didn’t see the time pass?

But I bet these moments happen so rarely… Instead, it’s way too often boredom (too easy) or stress (too challenging)!

But what if you could better understand what brings you into “FLOW”?

And what if you could actually START taking action to be more often in this “FLOW” state?

How would you FEEL?

This week’s topic: When are you in “flow” (immerged in what you’re doing)?

Think back of a time you were in “flow”…

Remember as much as you can about this moment… as if you were back to that time, reliving that moment…

Now, imagine that the next 20 minutes are just about YOU (your time, your space, your voice, your thoughts…) and you’re having a deep conversation with me, your coach... Just let your mind wander as you reflect on the questions below…:

  • What were the circumstances of that moment? – what you were doing, the time, the environment, your mindset, but also the challenges, the stretching you were dealing with…
  • What was it that made that moment, that situation, a “flow” moment for you? – what it the goal you were working on, the technical abilities required, the level of reflection, the environment, etc.?
  • Now that you have the “what”, how could you bring it into the present – even if just a little to start with?
  • And how could you incorporate more of that “what” into your life, so that you could trigger more “flow’ moments in your day-to-day life?
  • And to conclude: What did you discover about yourself during this conversation?
