Christelle,

2025 is around the corner, with its New Year’s resolutions, annual reviews, and goal settings…

And a tendency, for many of us, to make a (long) list of wishes for our personal life and another for our career, often based on what we think is expected of us by others (managers, social circle, society)… like doing more sport, eating more healthily, stopping smoking, or like getting another qualification, learning to manage a team, speaking at a professional event…

Do you recognize yourself in this description, even if only partially?

But do you know that an average resolution lasts less than 4 months (Forbes Health/One Poll survey)?

And do you know that only about 36% of people make it through the 1st month, and only 9% of people make it through the whole year (BetterHelp)?

Now, what’s the impact on YOU: your self-confidence, happiness, satisfaction with YOUR life… and their ripple effect on your social circle, maybe even your health?

And how about the impact on YOUR WORK, and therefore on your EMPLOYER: productivity, quality of work, relationship with colleagues… and the financial impact on the company, but also on your bonus, promotion, and salary increase?

Why is that? Here are a few reasons:

  • Lack of motivation, willingness, and interest in doing what's necessary to achieve that goal;
  • Working on too many goals at once and spreading yourself too thin (in terms of physical and mental energy, and time);
  • Having goals that are either too big (which can be overwhelming) or too vague (which may not give enough of a direction to move toward);
  • Not knowing how to achieve the goal, or even where to start… and ending up not doing much…
  • Lack of support from your social and professional circles; and
  • Not taking the time to build the habits you need to progress on your goal.

But WHAT IF you started with YOU

– while still considering your circumstances (because you don’t live in a vacuum)? – instead of what you think others expect you to do?

  • Because YOU are the best expert about “who you are”!
    • You know what you like and don’t like
    • You know what matters to you or not
    • You know what you’re prepared to do in your circumstance, and what you’re not prepared to do (or not sure about)
  • Putting aside the “why” (why you like something or not, why it matters to you or not, etc.);
  • And just “listening” to what comes up right now…

WHAT IF you looked at your personal life and career as ONE integrated entity (YOUR life) rather than 2 completely separated entities? - Because who hasn’t:

  • Had personal issues impact their work?
  • Had professional issues impact their personal life, interactions with family and friends, and health?
  • Been affected by a colleague’s negative mood caused by ongoing issues in their personal life?

And WHAT IF you identified YOUR priorities for 2025, and then empowered yourself to take action (to progress!) on those PRIORITIES, in your terms?

  • Starting with the end in mind: what do you want to get out of your life/career?
  • Asking yourself: Where are you now compared to that “end”?
  • What do you want to progress on 1st?

Well, that’s what we’ll explore together in the next few weeks…

But, in the meantime, why not take a moment to get yourself “in the mood” for that experience?

This week’s Coffee-break Coaching conversation

>>> A short conversation about a specific challenge that YOU’re facing, leading YOU to decide on ONE action (designed by YOU, for YOU) to take right away!

Now, imagine that the next 20 minutes are just about YOU (your time, your space, your voice, your thoughts…) and you’re having a deep conversation with me, your coach... Just let your mind wander as you reflect on the questions below…:

  • How do you feel about the way you normally set your New Year’s resolutions or goals?
  • What’s your level of satisfaction with your progress on those resolutions or goals?
  • Now how do you feel about the approach I suggest above?
  • What do you need to get yourself into the right mindset for this approach?
  • Are you ready to explore a different way of setting your New Year’s resolutions or goals?

So, what’s ONE action you’re COMMITTING to do THIS WEEK following this Coffee-break Coaching conversation? (even a small action like scheduling a task in your calendar!)
