Christelle,
How do you behave when you want to achieve a goal… but it’s not going as smoothly as you would like?
I know how I tend to act: I keep pushing, pushing, pushing… And by that I mean: I keep trying to make things happen, maybe even to get someone to do something… And very often I still don’t get what I want, and I’m tired, and I feel so unfulfilled and unsatisfied…
So I decided to explore this issue at one of my coaching sessions (yes, I may be a coach, but I also need to get coached otherwise I just get lost in my thoughts!)…
And, when talking about all the “pushing” I had been doing, I though of a boulder rolling downhill: it smashes flowers and trees along its way, but is can also get smashed by stronger rocks or big trees… and it can get stuck on its way down, never making it to the bottom of the hill… Which is a very good metaphor for how I feel when I’m trying to push, push, push…
So, what could I think of instead?
Well, here is the metaphor that I came up with: water flowing along, sometimes being still for a while, or getting caught in whirlpools or rapids, or having to make a long detour… and also sometimes building up strength to push an obstacle when there is no other way… but always looking for the easiest way toward its destination… That felt such a better way to deal with a slow progress… and that sounded much more like “trusting the process”, like trusting that water will flow, one way or another, to where it’s got to get to…
And I came up with my own quote, which I remind myself of every morning:
I’m like water flowing along rather than like a boulder smashing and getting smashed on its way down. - Christelle Soto-Suarez
How about you?
WHAT IF you could change how you deal with obstacles, making it easier on you?
How would you FEEL?
This week’s Coffee-break Coaching conversation
>>> A short conversation about a specific challenge that YOU’re facing, leading YOU to decide on ONE action (designed by YOU, for YOU) to take right away!
This week’s topic: To push, push, push… or to trust the process?
What’s not happening as you would like right now?
How are you “pushing” to make it happen?
How do you feel about all this “pushing”?
***
Now, imagine that the next 20 minutes are just about YOU (your time, your space, your voice, your thoughts…) and you’re having a deep conversation with me, your coach... Just let your mind wander as you reflect on the questions below…:
- What metaphor (object, smell, color, etc.) could represent how you feel when you keep “pushing” but you still don’t get what you want?
- What are 3 words that symbolize this metaphor? For example, for me, it’s: boulder, smashing, and smashed.
- In your situation, what could you replace these 3 words by to represent a smoother experience? For example, for me, it’s: water, flow, and destination.
- What metaphor comes to mind when you think of those 3 replacement words?
- How can you keep this new metaphor top of mind? Me, I made up a quote that I include in my morning routine…
- How do you feel now that you have a different, much smoother, approach to dealing with obstacles?
So, what’s ONE action you’re COMMITTING to do THIS WEEK following this Coffee-break Coaching conversation? (even a small action like scheduling a task in your calendar!)
And now, imagine you’ve taken that ONE action, and then another one, and another one… and you’re “trusting the process” more often than you’re “pushing, pushing, pushing” …
How does it FEEL like? What are you GAINING?
Are you READY to take action, to GROW, to get OUTSIDE of your comfort zone?

If you’d like additional support to take THIS action, to continue THIS conversation, or to START taking action on another goal / challenge, work with me and my Coffee-break Coaching experience:
